ALPINIST #46 – ON BELAY: The Choice of Discomfort

alp46-cover 001SAN LLC instructor and guide, Peter Jensen-Choi, has published Korean expedition reports for the AAJ for nearly fifteen years now. He was published in the most recent Alpinist magazine’s #46 issue’s On Belay feature section. The On Belay feature article, “The Choice of Discomfort”, not only takes the reader on an intimate approach to Korean alpine history and its developments toward big wall alpine style climbing since as far back as the Japanese colonial occupation of the then Chosun Dynasty, but also takes the reader on a journey into the minds of both the writer and Hak-jae Yoo, the most prolific Korean Himalayan alpinist of the past twenty-five plus years. Jensen-Choi also sheds light on and accurately portrays a niche of Korean climbers that have been misunderstood in the shadow of the heavier commercially driven siege-style high altitude Korean expeditions.
